The Challenge

A debut launch carries more risk than a backlist push — there's no existing review base, no algorithm history, no audience to reactivate. Worse, MQ had no social media platform at all going in. Colonel Khan & the Mystery of the Falcon Feather was over a decade in the making, introducing a classic "gentleman investigator" into a genre where readers are famously loyal to established series. The launch needed to build an audience from nothing, get advance readers in place before release, and give MQ — a founder used to running startups, not book campaigns — a single, clear system to track it all.

The Approach & Process

  1. Built the social platform from scratch — MQ had no Instagram or TikTok presence to launch from, so this started at the foundation, not the outreach

  2. Ran Instagram and TikTok outreach directly — engaging in real interaction and conversation with readers, not just broadcasting, which is what turned readers into people who shared the book on their own socials

  3. Pitched podcasts, bookstores, and blogs — extending reach beyond social outreach into earned media and in-person placement

  4. Built a Notion-based launch command center — single source of truth for ARC status, outreach tracking, content scheduling, and launch logistics

  5. Ran a 21-day content calendar — building anticipation into launch and sustaining visibility through the first critical weeks after

Reflection

This one started further back than the others — there was no platform to activate, so the win isn't just the review count, it's building the entire audience infrastructure a debut author needs and then converting it into podcasts, bookstore signings, and reviews within one launch cycle. The organic sharing from readers is the real signal: outreach built on genuine conversation, not broadcast messaging, gets readers invested enough to become part of the marketing themselves.
