The Challenge

A devotional isn't competing for a spot on someone's TBR pile the way a novel is — it's asking for a year of someone's mornings. That kind of book doesn't succeed by reaching the most readers; it succeeds by reaching the right ones — teen girls, and the parents, youth leaders, and mentors buying for them, who are genuinely wrestling with identity, insecurity, and faith. Time was tight, and nonfiction readers are harder to find than fiction ones — there's no equivalent of a genre-hungry BookTok community waiting with an open hand. The challenge wasn't visibility. It was finding the people who actually needed this book, fast.

The Approach & Process

  1. Focused outreach on Facebook and Instagram, where the actual audience — Christian parenting and youth ministry communities, faith-based reading spaces — was more findable than on book-discovery platforms built for fiction

  2. Targeted reviewers and readers who specifically cover devotional and inspirational content for young women, rather than casting toward general YA or lifestyle audiences

  3. Let the matching do the work — this wasn't about volume, it was about putting the book directly into the hands of people already looking for exactly what it offered

Tools & Strategies

  • Facebook and Instagram community outreach, targeted at faith-based and parenting audiences

  • Niche audience matching over broad-reach tactics

  • Direct relationship-building with readers likely to become long-term advocates, not just one-time reviewers

The Results

  • 24 reviews — modest on paper, but not the real measure of this campaign

  • The book was physically carried into churches and Bible camps by the readers it reached, extending its life far beyond any single review

  • A pastor's wife began sharing the book with the teens in her church

  • A teacher started using it in her Bible study class

  • Mothers used it as a bonding tool with their daughters

  • Readers wrote back saying they wished they'd had this book as teenagers — and others, now adults, said it helped them just as much as it would a teen

Reflection

This is the campaign I'm most proud of, and it's not because of the review count. Twenty-four reviews will never look impressive on a spreadsheet next to BITTERSWEET's 150. But this book found its way into churches and Bible camps and Bible study classes — places a review count can't measure and an algorithm doesn't see. What moved me most wasn't the metrics, it was reading messages from women who said this book met them somewhere a novel never could. That's the outcome I actually set out for when I started this work — not just moving copies, but putting a book into the hands of the people it was written for, at the moment it mattered.
